Engineering Responsible AI: foundations for environmentally sustainable AI

Published by: Royal Academy of Engineering

Description:

Foundations for environmentally responsible AI proposes five foundational steps that can be taken to begin progress towards environmentally sustainable AI. While the report frames the actions for a policymaker audience, the recommendations within this report are relevant to public and private organisations of all sizes who develop or use AI.

AI systems and services can place high levels of demand on energy, water and critical materials. The foundational steps and recommended actions within this report aim to reduce this unsustainable resource consumption and minimise related environmental impacts, while improving understandings of environmental risk over the longer-term.

This report is the first on AI sustainability from our engineering responsible AI programme. Further work will continue throughout 2025.
